Common Challenges
Recently, our clients that are part of the NHS faced challenges common in the healthcare industry:
- Hundreds or thousands of staff to train in a short period of time.
- Varying working hours and shift patterns, making it difficult to arrange classroom training.
- Differing IT skill levels requiring different types of training programs.
- Training employees and assessing their skills to ensure competency.
- The ability to support staff after go-live (i.e. online help).
- Access to documentation for all major systems.
"The world's biggest civil information technology program"...
The National Programme for IT (NPfIT) is an initiative to move the National Health Service (NHS) towards a single, centrally-mandated electronic care record system for patients. NPfIT will connect 30,000 General Practitioners to 300 hospitals throughout England. While the initiative was established by the Department of Health, the NHS Connecting for Health (NHS CfH) agency will be responsible for delivering the program. According to NHS CfH, this is "the world's biggest civil information technology program."
... and STT Trainer
Hospitals throughout England needed to ensure that end users were competently trained on the new systems. To meet this goal, they engaged the services of Kaplan IT Learning to work with different hospitals and ensure that staff are effectively trained and supported before, and following, go-live.
STT Trainer’s ability to capture data from any IT system, including Cerner Millennium, iSoft, ICE and legacy systems such as iDX makes it a great fit for big projects that require a large degree of flexibility.
While some hospitals utilized STT Trainer to create their own training, others relied on Kaplan IT to develop the training, which included localized content and branding. Content formats included simulations (preview, training, self-assessment and live help) and documentation (Word, HTML and PDF). The content was also available on-line 24/7. Since content developed in STT Trainer is SCORM conformant, it was possible to upload training to existing Learning Management Systems, making it available on hospitals’ intranet and extranet sites.
With STT Trainer offering the ability to create content from a single source file, information continues to be easy to edit, update, and maintain. Users can be trained in a mirrored version of their live system, and can practice in a safe environment. STT offers a ‘learn by doing’ approach for rapid adoption of new technologies.
Kaplan IT Learning also developed self assessments to enable hospitals to track users’ progress and competency levels.
